Accessing sexual health services

June 2021 - service update

We are pleased to have resumed most of our services following the lockdown period. Please note that demand is high, telephone lines are extremely busy and waiting lists are in place to help us help you. We are working hard to support you.
*Our regular/daily Walk-In clinics remain CLOSED across all sites  - please see the following information as to how to access care: 

For general contraceptive and sexual health needs we continue to work on a telephone triage basis so that we can keep our waiting rooms limited and offer care remotely when possible and if appropriate to individual needs.  

  • Telephone triage and consultations: Our telephone line 0300 123 5474 is open 8.00am - 5.00pm Monday to Friday where you can access care / request an appointment. Your details will be added to a clinician's call-back list with a brief description of your needs. The list is assessed by our clinical team throughout the day and if your need is prioritised you will receive a call-back the same day, please note that this can be between 8am and 7pm. The nurse will have a tele- triage conversation with you to decide what best steps to take, this may result in you being asked to attend clinic for a face to face appointment but only if absolutely necessary. Our face to face appointments at clinic may be scheduled between 8am - 7pm. If your appointment request is assessed as routine we will still aim to call you back as soon as possible  - however during times of high demand you may receive a text message providing advice, guidance and signposting or suggesting a call back the following day. 
  • Face to Face appointments: Each request will be assessed and triaged by a clinician as above and only those who require face to face care will be asked to attend the clinic. This will include those who require an examination or procedure. Face to face appointments are available Monday to Friday 8am - 7pm. 
  • Contraception: If your pill runs out within days, urgent prescription ordering is available using local pharmacy services via NHS 111. See emergency prescription service
  • Emergency contraception: This is available for free from a range of Wirral pharmacies who supply it from their community premises in partnership with our service. Many are offering telephone consultations and collection. More information can be found at Pharmacy Services.
  • Free postal STI kits: Test kits are still available online, the kits are free and available to anybody aged 16 and over living in Wirral * Wirral postcodes CH41 - CH63. Postal test kits are aimed at people who are not experiencing symptoms of an infection. There are a range of kits to choose from for STI testing. All kits are discreet and easy to use. 
  • STI treatment / medication: We continue to provide medication and treatment for diagnosed STIs, using virtual and postal platforms where appropriate. If you have received a positive test result for an STI, or have had sexual contact with somebody who has tested positive please contact us on 0300 1235474.

 

NHS 111

NHS 111 can help if you need urgent medical help or you're not sure what to do. They will ask questions about your symptoms so you get the help you need. If you need to go to A&E, NHS 111 will book an arrival time. This might mean you spend less time in A&E. This also helps with social distancing.

You can get help from 111.nhs.uk or call 111. It's available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Additional support

Our online support is open 24/7 where you can access free NHS STI postal test kits (aged 16 and over an live in Wirral). Our website also has a list of partnership Pharmacies who work with us to offer Emergency Contraption. In addition to this , we are currently working with some GP surgeries located across Wirral who can offer LARC (long acting reversible contraception / coils and implants) in partnership with our service. These services are now open and available for bookings following an assessment call with our team.

Young person clinics at Brook Wirral (Aged 19 and under) - June 2021 update 

We are currently arranging to see people in our clinic ONLY following a telephone assessment with one of our Brook Wirral team 

Face to face appointments will only be allocated following a telephone assessment. This enables us to provide care to those most in need of sexual health or contraception services and reduce the amount of people in the waiting room.

We are currently only operating our clinic from our central location: Brook, 14 Whetstone Lane, Birkenhead CH41 2QR

Telephone assessments are provided during Brook opening hours:

Monday to Thursday 3pm - 6pm 

Friday 3pm - 5.30pm 

Saturday 1.15pm - 3.30pm 

We advise that you call us on 0151 670- 0177 during these times and where possible as near to us opening as you can so that we can allocate you a face to face visit on the same day if required. 

Please do not turn up to clinic unless you have called us in advance and spoken to a clinician. We will be unable to see you as an unplanned walk in patient. 

If you call 0151 670 0177 before 3pm or outside of any of the above times, you will reach an answerphone where you can leave a message and one of our team will contact you. If you feel your need is more urgent and you need help sooner please call our Sexual Health Wirral line on 0300 1235474. Phone lines are open 8am - 5pm Monday to Friday. 

 

If we ask you to attend an appointment at our Brook clinic please follow this guidance: 

On arrival at the Brook door please call 0151 670 0177 and select option 1. The receptionist on duty will ask you to confirm your name , ask you how you are feeling and check you have a suitable face covering. You will then be invited in to sit in our waiting area. We ask that you attend alone where possible. 

Before attending your appointment at Brook:

Firstly make sure you are well enough to attend.
Follow the government issued guidance on staying at home if you have possible coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms:

  • new continuous cough
  • high temperature
  • a loss of, or change to, your sense of smell or taste

You must not attend your appointment if you have any of the above symptoms.
