Most people with chlamydia don't notice any symptoms and don't always know they have it. If you do develop symptoms, you may experience:
- pain when urinating
- unusual discharge from the genital area
In women
- pain in the lower abdomen
- bleeding during or after sex
- bleeding between periods
In men
- pain or swelling in the testicles
Chlamydia doesn't usually cause any symptoms and can normally be treated with a short course of antibiotics.
Chlamydia can be serious if it's not treated early on and if left untreated. It can spread to other parts of your body and lead to long-term health problems.

Anyone who is sexually active can catch chlamydia. You're most at risk if you have a new sexual partner or don't use a barrier method of contraception, such as a condom, when having sex.
Condoms help prevent against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancy and are free at any of our walk-in and wait clinics*. To make sure you use a condom correctly and effectively read more about condom tips and watch our condom demonstration video.
You can catch chlamydia from oral sex too, so regular testing is really important to be sure.
