21 day postnatal contraception guide

You can get pregnant again from 21 days after giving birth, even if your periods have not returned and even if you are breastfeeding.

Week 1 (days 1-7) - Rest, recover and start the conversation
  • Ask about contraception before leaving the maternity ward 
  • Your body is recovering after birth 
  • Breastfeeding doesn't aways prevent pregnancy 
  • Support is available from your midwife, GP or from our team here at Sexual Health Wirral

 

Week 2 (days 8-14) - Support at home
  • Visit from your health visitor 
  • Ask about feeding, wellbeing and contraception 
  • Condoms or short term methods can help you decide 
  • If you feel low, worried or overwhelmed access support from your health visitor of GP. 
Week 3 (days 15-21) - Make your plan
  • Make your contraception plan before day 21 
  • Options may include the mini pill, injection, implant or coil
  • Do not wait for your period to return 
  • Fertility may return from day 21
