DoxyPEP: an overview
DoxyPEP stands for doxycycline post exposure prophylaxis. This is taking a dose of a doxycycline (an antibiotic) after sex to reduce your risk of acquiring syphilis and chlamydia
To use doxyPEP, you'll take 200 mg of doxycycline (two 100 mg capsules) ideally within a 24-hour timeframe after sex and no later than 72 hours after sex. You should not take more than one 200 mg dose within a 24-hour period. If you have sex again, you should wait at least 24 hours before taking another dose.
It is advised that you avoid dairy, antacids, and supplements with calcium, magnesium, or iron for two hours before or after your dose. These can make doxyPEP less effective.
DoxyPEP is available now at Sexual Health Wirral. Call 0300 123 5474 for more information.
